Pakistanโs higher education sector has gained international recognition after 52 universities secured positions in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Rankings 2026.
The latest rankings highlighted Pakistan among a select group of countries with strong institutional representation. Moreover, the results reflected growing attention toward sustainability, research outcomes, and international academic engagement.
Among all participating institutions, the University of Lahore delivered a historic achievement by becoming Pakistanโs highest-ranked university and securing a place among the worldโs top 100.
University of Lahore Leads Pakistanโs Performance
The University of Lahore emerged as Pakistanโs top-ranked institution and achieved 71st position globally.
This result marked a major milestone because it became the first Pakistani university to enter the global top 100 of sustainability-focused rankings.
The rankings evaluated universities on their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Overall, 1,646 universities from 116 countries and territories participated in this yearโs assessment.
Additionally, Pakistan ranked among only nine countries with more than 50 universities represented.
Pakistani Universities Strengthen Global Presence
Several other Pakistani universities also delivered notable performances.
Three institutions secured positions in the 301โ400 category:
- Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology, Rahim Yar Khan
- MNS University of Agriculture, Multan
- Superior University
Meanwhile, a strong group of institutions entered the 401โ600 category.
These included Iqra University, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, NED University of Engineering and Technology, University of Education Lahore, University of Faisalabad, University of Kotli (AJK), University of Poonch Rawalakot, University of Wah, and Women University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Bagh.
Furthermore, universities across Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir appeared across higher ranking bands.
How THE Sustainability Rankings Measure Performance
Unlike traditional university rankings, THE Sustainability Impact Rankings focus on broader societal contributions.
The assessment measures institutional performance through:
- Research impact
- Stewardship
- Community outreach
- Teaching quality
To qualify for the overall ranking, institutions must submit performance data for SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals and at least three additional Sustainable Development Goals.
As a result, the rankings aim to evaluate how universities contribute to global social and environmental progress.
Global Rankings and International Comparison
At the international level, the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom secured first position overall.
Meanwhile, Griffith University in Australia ranked second globally.
The latest edition also highlighted the Philippines as the country with the largest representation, recording 160 universities in the rankings.
However, Pakistanโs performance stood out because of the scale and diversity of institutions included.
What Pakistanโs Representation Signals
The inclusion of 52 universities signals a broader shift in Pakistanโs academic priorities.
Universities are increasingly focusing on sustainability, research quality, institutional partnerships, and long-term development goals.
Moreover, strong participation across multiple ranking bands reflects growing engagement with global educational benchmarks.
As Pakistani institutions continue improving international visibility, sustainability performance may become an increasingly important factor in shaping future academic competitiveness.
The latest rankings indicate that Pakistanโs universities are not only expanding academically but also strengthening their contribution to global development objectives.
