Pakistanโs oil industry has warned of possible petrol shortages in several areas due to declining fuel stocks, delayed import clearances, rising demand, and financial challenges.
The Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) has urged the government to take immediate steps to prevent supply disruptions across the country.
Petrol Stocks Fall to Critical Levels
In a letter marked as โMost Urgentโ to Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, OCAC highlighted concerns over the countryโs current fuel situation.
The industry body said Pakistan currently holds around 370,000 metric tons of petrol, which covers nearly 15 days of national consumption.
However, OCAC warned that the actual available supply is lower because some imported fuel shipments remain stuck at customs due to clearance delays through the WEBOC system.
Imported Fuel Clearance Becomes Key Concern
OCAC said three petrol cargoes are expected to arrive between July 15 and July 17.
The council stressed that timely clearance of these shipments is important to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies, especially in markets outside major cities.
The industry body also pointed out that fuel availability became more difficult after authorities did not approve a planned Pakistan State Oil (PSO) import cargo in June.
Rising Demand Adds Pressure on Supplies
According to OCAC, expectations of higher international oil prices have encouraged dealers and consumers to increase fuel purchases.
This sudden rise in demand has placed additional pressure on already limited petrol inventories.
The council warned that continued pressure on stocks could create supply challenges if authorities do not take immediate action.
Oil Companies Face Financial Difficulties
OCAC also raised concerns about the financial condition of oil marketing companies.
The council said companies are waiting for the payment of Rs66.7 billion in outstanding Price Differential Claims.
According to the industry body, delayed payments have affected companiesโ ability to finance new fuel imports. Additionally, any increase in global oil prices could further raise their working capital needs.
Industry Calls for Immediate Government Action
OCAC has requested the government to clear pending payments, resolve customs delays, and support the smooth import and transportation of petroleum products.
The council warned that without urgent measures, some regions of Pakistan may experience localized petrol shortages in the coming days.
Authorities are expected to review the concerns raised by the oil industry and take steps to maintain a stable fuel supply nationwide.
