Pakistan has strengthened its pharmaceutical oversight after a key laboratory achieved international recognition for quality and safety standards. The Ministry of National Health Services announced that the Central Drugs Laboratory in Karachi, operating under the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, has secured prequalification from the World Health Organization. Consequently, the milestone aligns Pakistanโs drug testing system with globally accepted benchmarks.
Officials highlight improved testing capacity
Authorities said the certification confirms that the laboratory meets strict international standards for ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of medicines. Moreover, Drap Chief Executive Dr. Obaidullah Malik stated that the recognition reflects growing confidence in Pakistanโs regulatory framework and technical capabilities.
Previously, officials often sent drug samples abroad, including to laboratories in Singapore, for verification. However, with this recognition in place, Pakistan can now conduct high-level testing domestically. As a result, the country is positioned to serve as a reliable testing hub for medicines intended for international markets.
Leaders link milestone to economic growth
Meanwhile, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal described the development as a historic achievement. He emphasized that the certification not only strengthens public health safeguards but also supports the expansion of Pakistanโs pharmaceutical industry.
In addition, experts believe the move will enhance the credibility of โMade in Pakistanโ medical products worldwide. Therefore, the recognition could open new export opportunities and contribute to broader economic growth. As global demand for quality medicines rises, Pakistan aims to leverage this milestone to expand its footprint in international markets.
