US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that a possible agreement to help end the conflict with Iran could materialise as early as today, raising expectations of a diplomatic breakthrough. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi before leaving the Indian capital, Rubio said recent developments showed progress, although both sides had yet to finalise a deal.
โWe thought we might have some news last night, maybe today,โ Rubio said. However, he urged caution and told reporters not to read too much into the timing of any announcement.
Diplomatic Momentum Builds
Rubioโs remarks came as tensions remained high across the region. Nevertheless, he indicated that Washington and its regional partners had made meaningful progress in recent talks. He also reaffirmed that Israel has the right to defend itself against attacks, especially in response to missile launches.
โIsrael always has a right to protect itself,โ Rubio said, adding that any direct attack would justify a response.
Meanwhile, his comments suggested that the United States may accept a phased diplomatic arrangement with Iran rather than demand a full agreement immediately. That approach could allow both sides to begin negotiations while addressing urgent regional concerns first.
Focus Turns to Nuclear Talks and Hormuz
Earlier, in an interview with The New York Times, Rubio said the US stood ready to enter serious negotiations over Iranโs nuclear programme if Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
He stressed that reopening the strategic waterway remains an immediate priority. After that, negotiators would begin detailed talks on uranium enrichment, highly enriched uranium stockpiles, and Iranโs commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons.
