SANYA, China: Pakistan achieved a major milestone in naval modernization by commissioning the first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M HANGOR, in Sanya. Asif Ali Zardari attended the ceremony as chief guest, while Admiral Naveed Ashraf joined senior officials at the event, according to Inter-Services Public Relations.
President Zardari described the commissioning as a historic step forward and emphasized Pakistanโs commitment to maintaining a robust and credible defence posture. He stated that the country remains fully prepared to safeguard its sovereignty, secure maritime interests, and protect vital economic routes. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of strengthening naval capabilities in an evolving security environment.
Advanced capabilities to secure maritime interests
The naval chief stressed that disruptions at critical maritime choke points increasingly threaten global trade and energy flows. Therefore, he underscored the need for technologically advanced naval forces to ensure a stable and rules-based maritime order.
He explained that Hangor-class submarines feature advanced weapons, modern sensors, and air-independent propulsion systems. As a result, these submarines will significantly enhance operational readiness and deterrence capabilities. Additionally, they will help secure Sea Lines of Communication across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.
Historic legacy and growing Pakistan-China cooperation
The naval chief also recalled the legacy of the original PNS Hangor, which sank an enemy warship in 1971, marking a defining moment in naval history. He noted that the new submarine will carry forward that legacy with modern technology.
Furthermore, the commissioning reflects deepening defence ties between Pakistan and China. Senior officials from both navies attended the ceremony, reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
Meanwhile, Pakistanโs leadership, including the prime minister and top military officials, congratulated the nation and the navy on achieving this significant milestone.
