The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has inaugurated the 51st International Nathiagali Summer College (INSC) on Physics and Contemporary Needs, reaffirming its commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and international collaboration.
The annual event, running from July 6 to July 18, continues a tradition that began in 1976. The initiative was inspired by Nobel Laureate Professor Abdus Salam, who envisioned a platform where scientists from developed and developing countries could exchange knowledge and ideas.
Over the past five decades, the Summer College has grown into an internationally respected forum for advanced education, scientific cooperation, and research development.
PAEC Reaffirms Commitment to Scientific Excellence
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, PAEC Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar described the International Nathiagali Summer College as one of the Commission’s flagship scientific initiatives.
He said the program reflects PAEC’s long-standing commitment to research, institution-building, and global scientific partnerships.
According to the Chairman, the College has welcomed hundreds of internationally recognized scientists over the years, including nine Nobel Laureates.
It has also trained thousands of young researchers from Pakistan and more than 75 countries.
The institution has contributed significantly to Pakistan’s scientific research, particularly in high-energy physics, CERN collaborations, nuclear science, accelerator technology, laser science, plasma physics, and advanced materials research.
Focus Expands to Emerging Technologies
The Chairman noted that the Summer College has continuously adapted to global scientific developments.
As a result, the program now includes emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, advanced manufacturing, and data-driven science.
He explained that the curriculum connects fundamental scientific research with modern technologies and practical applications.
Consequently, participants can explore innovative solutions in energy, healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable development.
Five Key Themes for INSC 2026
This year’s Summer College focuses on five multidisciplinary themes that reflect rapidly evolving scientific fields.
The program covers:
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Advanced Manufacturing Techniques
- Nuclear Techniques in Agriculture and Biotechnology
- Nuclear Techniques in Health and Environment
- Advances in Plasma Science and Fusion Technology
These areas support Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0 technologies, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, climate-smart agriculture, healthcare innovation, environmental sustainability, and future energy solutions.
Investment in Research and Young Scientists
Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar emphasized that rapid technological progress is transforming industries worldwide.
He said artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and semiconductor innovation are reshaping the future of energy, healthcare, communication, and industry.
Therefore, he stressed the importance of sustained investment in research infrastructure and human capital.
He added that initiatives such as the International Nathiagali Summer College provide young scientists with valuable opportunities to gain international exposure and strengthen their research capabilities.
PAEC Highlights Broader National Contributions
During his address, the Chairman also highlighted PAEC’s broader role in Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
He said the Commission continues promoting the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology to improve people’s quality of life.
According to him, PAEC’s six nuclear power plants generate more than 3,500 megawatts of clean, reliable, and affordable electricity.
These facilities strengthen Pakistan’s energy security while supporting environmental sustainability.
He also noted that PAEC operates 21 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals and diagnostic centers, providing comprehensive cancer care to nearly 80 percent of the country’s cancer patients.
In addition, the Commission’s agricultural research centers continue developing improved crop varieties, enhancing pest management, and promoting climate-resilient farming to strengthen food security.
The Chairman added that PAEC is also expanding research activities in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, semiconductor research, and other advanced scientific fields.
Young Researchers Encouraged to Drive Innovation
Concluding his address, Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar reaffirmed PAEC’s commitment to scientific excellence, international cooperation, and the continued success of the International Nathiagali Summer College.
He encouraged young researchers to embrace innovation, think beyond traditional boundaries, and contribute meaningfully to society through science and technology.
Scientists From Around the World Participate
Earlier, Scientific Secretary INSC Dr. Rahat Ullah welcomed participants and shared details about this year’s event. He said 45 distinguished scientists from 20 countries are participating in the 2026 edition.
The participants represent Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, and the Middle East.Leading Pakistani researchers, industry experts, and young scientists are also attending the program.
According to Dr. Rahat Ullah, 300 selected participants will attend the Summer College in person. Meanwhile, hundreds more will join the sessions online through live streaming arranged by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
He said the strong international participation reflects the growing global recognition of the International Nathiagali Summer College and Pakistan’s expanding role in scientific cooperation, science diplomacy, innovation, and human resource development.
The inaugural ceremony concluded with Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar presenting commemorative shields to international faculty members and participants.
Later, Member (Science) Dr. Shakeel Abbas Rofi presented a commemorative shield to the PAEC Chairman in recognition of his support for the event.
