A vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing outbound through the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and damaging its engine room.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre confirmed the incident on Tuesday. It said the vesselโs company security officer reported the attack during transit.
Crew Receives Omani Coast Guard Assistance
The impact damaged the vesselโs engine room and caused one crew casualty, UKMTO said.
Meanwhile, the remaining crew members received assistance from the Omani Coast Guard.
Authorities reported no environmental impact following the incident. However, officials have launched an investigation to determine what caused the vessel to come under attack.
UKMTO advised ships operating in the strategic waterway to exercise caution.
The maritime security agency also urged vessels to report any suspicious activity while navigating the area.
Strait Faces Rising Security Concerns
The incident comes as tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
The strategic waterway handles a significant share of global energy shipments. Therefore, attacks or disruptions could threaten international shipping and energy supplies.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue to secure arrangements that would protect freedom of navigation through the strait.
However, the latest incident has renewed concerns among shipping companies and maritime authorities.
Authorities are expected to examine the vessel and gather information from the surviving crew to establish the circumstances surrounding the strike.
