ISLAMABAD: The Federal government has shortlisted the new President for the National Bank of Pakistan, the largest state-run commercial bank in Pakistan. New President is being appointed in the wake of retirement of NBP President Rehmat Ali Hasnie. His tenure as President and CEO of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) expired on 6th of August, but the government extended it till Friday (August 21), 2026.
Among the potential candidates were: Hassan Raza, Muhammad Abdullah, Zafar Masud, Mudassar Khan, Ali Muhammad Mahoon, Imran Sarwar, Farukh Iqbal, and Rehmat Hasnei. Hasneiโs three-year tenure ended today. According to sources, the process of the interviews of the candidates has completed on 11th of August, 2026. In the next couple of days, the Ministry of Finance will notify the appointment of new President of the National Bank of Pakistan.
The listed bank informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange about the development through an official notice. The notice confirmed that Hasnieโs tenure ended on Friday after the government granted him a short extension earlier this month.
Hasnieโs Leadership at NBP
The government had reappointed Hasnie as NBP President and CEO for an additional two weeks earlier in August.
Previously, the Finance Division recommended his name to the federal cabinet for the permanent position in July 2023.
The government subsequently appointed him as NBP President in August 2023 for a three-year term.
Hasnie joined NBP in 2010 and later led several key divisions within the bank.
He headed investment banking, corporate banking and priority sector lending during his career at the institution.
Extensive Financial Sector Experience
Hasnei has more than 25 years of professional experience across Pakistanโs financial sector.
His expertise includes economic research, capital markets, investment banking, treasury operations and credit markets.
Before joining NBP, he worked with various institutions in Pakistanโs financial industry.
Hasnei holds a Master of Arts degree in Development Banking from The American University in the United States.
Meanwhile, the government has yet to announce details regarding a permanent successor to lead NBP following the expiry of his tenure.
