The National Assembly passed the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Repeal Bill 2026 on Thursday. The legislation moved forward despite heated exchanges and procedural disruptions during the session.
The House witnessed several dramatic moments, including a dispute over quorum and disagreements among lawmakers on other issues. However, proceedings continued and important legislative business was completed.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq repeatedly rejected objections raised by MNA Iqbal Afridi regarding quorum. The speaker said lawmakers could not raise the issue every half hour.
Afridi continued protesting and repeatedly thumped his desk. He claimed the session was being conducted in an unconstitutional manner.
Speaker Suspends Iqbal Afridi
In response, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq defended the conduct of proceedings. He also ordered a count of lawmakers present in the House.
After officials confirmed the required strength, the speaker allowed the session to continue. The ruling effectively dismissed concerns raised by the opposition lawmaker.
Later, MNA Farah Naz moved a motion seeking the suspension of Iqbal Afridi. The House promptly adopted the motion.
The speaker then announced Afridiโs suspension for the remainder of the session. He also ruled that the lawmaker would not receive allowances related to the current sitting.
Tensions Mark Assembly Proceedings
The tense atmosphere continued as the speaker directed Afridi to leave the chamber. He warned of further action if the lawmaker refused to comply.
Following the warning, Afridi immediately left the House. The session then resumed without further disruption.
Despite the controversy, lawmakers completed legislative business and passed the PIA Corporation repeal bill. The development marks another step in the government’s efforts to reform the national flag carrier.
The session highlighted ongoing tensions within the Assembly. Nevertheless, the House maintained quorum and proceeded with its scheduled agenda.
