One of the world’s largest container ships has arrived at Karachi Port, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime sector and international trade connectivity.
The MSC Loreto docked at the South Asia Pakistan Terminals (SAPTL) on Sunday, where officials from the Karachi Port Trust welcomed the ultra-large container vessel.
Built in 2023 and sailing under the Liberian flag, the ship measures 399.9 metres in length. Moreover, it ranks among the world’s largest container vessels currently in commercial service.
The MSC Loreto has a maximum carrying capacity of 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). During its latest voyage, it delivered 3,802 TEUs of cargo destined for Karachi.
According to Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking data, the vessel, registered under IMO number 9934735, arrived at the port at 07:05 UTC.
The arrival highlights Karachi Port’s growing ability to accommodate some of the largest container ships operating on international trade routes.
Furthermore, the Karachi Port Trust said the vessel’s visit reflects continued infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements at the port.
Officials added that handling ultra-large container ships demonstrates the port’s expanding capabilities and improved efficiency.
They also noted that such arrivals will strengthen Pakistan’s role in regional and global maritime trade while enhancing connectivity with major international shipping networks.
The development is expected to improve cargo handling capacity and support growing trade volumes through Pakistan’s busiest seaport.
Additionally, the successful berthing of the MSC Loreto underscores increasing confidence among global shipping companies in Karachi Port’s modern facilities and services.
Pakistan has continued investing in port infrastructure to boost maritime logistics and facilitate larger vessels. Consequently, officials believe these improvements will enhance trade competitiveness, attract more international shipping lines, and support long-term economic growth through stronger global supply chain integration.
