ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi rushed to Iran today with the aim to facilitate the resumption of the US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland. Iran put on hold formal signing ceremony to sign the US-Iran peace deal in Geneva, following Israeli attacks on Lebanon. However, as Israel has signed a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah/Lebanon, Pakistan has intensified efforts for further talks in Switzerland.
Foreign Ministers of the United States and Iran today left for Switzerland to resume peace talks.
Iran has confirmed signing an agreement with the United States to formally end weeks of hostilities, marking a significant step toward easing regional tensions. The announcement follows a ceasefire that halted the most intense phase of the conflict earlier this year.
The war began on February 28 after joint US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian military commanders. Consequently, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks against multiple targets, drawing several countries across the region into the escalating conflict.
However, an April truce brought an end to the heaviest fighting and created an opportunity for diplomatic engagement. Since then, both sides have held discussions aimed at preventing another military escalation.
On Thursday, Iranian officials announced that Tehran had signed a peace agreement with the United States to formally conclude the conflict. Furthermore, the deal is expected to pave the way for additional negotiations on broader security and political issues.
According to Iran, future talks will focus on reaching a comprehensive agreement that also addresses its long-disputed nuclear programme. Officials said the negotiations are intended to reduce tensions and establish a framework for long-term regional stability.
The agreement represents the latest diplomatic effort to prevent renewed conflict after weeks of military confrontation. Nevertheless, both sides are expected to continue negotiations before any wider political or nuclear settlement is finalised.
