Reports identify vessel as part of operation tied to oil magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani
Maritime monitoring service TankerTrackers.com said on Thursday that a vessel Iranian media reported had recently run aground in the Strait of Hormuz has actually remained stranded in the same location since March.
The monitoring group identified the ship as the Arista, a Comoros-flagged tanker that it said operates within a shipping network allegedly managed by Iranian oil businessman Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani.
According to the report, the vessel’s condition predates recent claims surrounding its grounding, raising questions over reports that linked the incident to navigation through a route allegedly recommended by the United States.
Shamkhani, the son of former Iranian security official Ali Shamkhani, faces sanctions from the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom over allegations that he operates an international network involved in transporting Iranian and Russian oil.
Western governments allege sanctions evasion network
The US Treasury alleges that Shamkhani’s network uses front companies, falsified shipping documentation and ship-to-ship oil transfers to conceal the origin of petroleum exports and bypass international sanctions. Authorities also claim the organisation generates billions of dollars through the sale of crude oil, refined products and liquefied petroleum gas.
The European Union has similarly accused the network of blending and rebranding petroleum products to disguise their origin before export.
Shamkhani has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Multiple sanctions remain in force
Washington first imposed sanctions on Shamkhani in 2025 before expanding restrictions earlier this year under measures targeting Iranian energy networks. The European Union has also designated him for alleged involvement in Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, while the United Kingdom imposed asset freezes, travel restrictions and business sanctions.
Officials in the US and Europe maintain that the shipping network helps generate revenue for Iran and Russia despite international sanctions. Meanwhile, the reported status of the Arista has renewed attention on commercial shipping activity and sanctions enforcement in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
