A record-breaking heatwave smashed temperature records across Europe on Wednesday, triggering widespread power outages and an unprecedented surge in cooling equipment sales across the continent. Atmospheric patterns are currently trapping hot air in place. Experts note that human-induced global warming significantly worsens these extreme conditions.
In France, the national temperature indicator reached 29.8ยฐC on Tuesday, marking the hottest day since records began in 1947. Authorities placed over 90 percent of the French population under high heat alerts as temperatures soared between 39ยฐC and 41ยฐC. The intense heat heavily strained the local electrical infrastructure. Consequently, a major transformer malfunction left roughly 68,000 households without electricity in the northwestern Finistere department on Wednesday. Overall, the power disruptions impacted up to 106,000 clients by late Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the extreme weather fueled a massive surge in commercial retail sales. French hypermarket operator Carrefour sold 30,000 fans and air conditioning units by Monday evening alone. This volume represented a thousand-fold increase compared to a normal business day. Similarly, online sales on Amazon nearly doubled last week compared to the same period in 2025.
The blistering heatwave is rapidly expanding into southern and eastern parts of the continent as well. Italy issued maximum red alerts for 16 major cities, including Rome and Milan. Furthermore, Poland, Croatia, and Hungary prepared for record-breaking temperatures by elevating their national heat warnings to the highest categories. In contrast, Spain provided the only immediate relief in Western Europe, where weather services reported a slight temperature drop on Wednesday.
