Lawmakers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s tribal districts and Malakand Division have opposed the federal government’s proposed tax measures. They warned of protest demonstrations unless authorities withdraw the decision. The lawmakers raised their concerns during the provincial assembly’s supplementary budget session.
Representatives argued that residents should receive relief instead of additional financial burdens. They also urged the federal government to fulfill previous commitments before introducing new taxes. According to the lawmakers, the region still awaits promised development funds.
Lawmakers Reject Tax Proposal
Minister for Housing Dr. Amjad Ali criticized the proposed taxation during the assembly session. He said the federal government announced taxes for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas. However, he claimed the National Economic Council did not discuss the proposal.
Furthermore, he argued that areas affected by militancy and natural disasters deserved support instead of taxation. He also maintained that the decision violated commitments made when the former Swat State joined Pakistan.
Concerns Over Economy and Employment
Lawmakers stated that the Swat State received a century-long tax-free guarantee after joining Pakistan. They also insisted the federal government should first release the promised Rs100 billion annually for tribal districts.
Meanwhile, treasury lawmaker Fazal Hakim said elected representatives would continue defending their constituents’ rights. He warned that new taxes could force industries to relocate from the region. Consequently, he said thousands of people could lose their jobs if businesses moved elsewhere.
The lawmakers reiterated their opposition and vowed to continue protesting until the proposed taxation policy is withdrawn. They urged the federal government to reconsider the decision through consultation and dialogue.
