Pakistan Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle foreign currency through Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. Customs officials also arrested a passenger after recovering undeclared foreign currency during an inspection. Consequently, authorities have launched legal proceedings under relevant laws.
Customs Recover Hidden Foreign Currency
According to a Pakistan Customs spokesperson, officials intercepted a suspicious passenger during routine checks. They conducted a detailed examination after identifying irregularities in his luggage.
The customs team recovered 20,000 US dollars, 1,770 UAE dirhams and 1,410 Chinese yuan. However, the passenger initially declared that he possessed only 4,000 US dollars.
Officials later discovered the remaining foreign currency concealed inside a secret compartment of the passenger’s luggage. Therefore, customs authorities seized the undeclared amount and detained the suspect.
Legal Action Initiated Against Passenger
Following the recovery, customs officials registered a case under the Foreign Currency Act, 1969. Authorities have also initiated legal proceedings against the passenger.
Pakistan Customs said investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the smuggling attempt. Meanwhile, officials reaffirmed their commitment to preventing illegal cross-border movement of currency through the country’s airports.
