India has signed an agreement with the United States to purchase Javelin anti-tank missile systems.
The US Embassy in India announced the agreement on Friday. However, officials did not disclose the deal’s financial value.
The FGM-148 Javelin is a medium-range guided missile system jointly produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX. The weapon uses a fire-and-forget system and can target various armored vehicles.
India Strengthens Defence Cooperation
The US Embassy said American forces and several international customers already use the missile system. Meanwhile, US Ambassador Sergio Gor welcomed the agreement between the two countries.
Gor said the deal would create new opportunities for defence industries. He also highlighted the growing capabilities of the bilateral defence partnership.
“This agreement reflects a defence partnership that is growing deeper,” Gor said. He added that future cooperation could strengthen both countries’ defence industries.
India did not immediately issue a statement regarding the agreement. However, the deal highlights continued military cooperation despite recent diplomatic tensions.
Javelin System Offers Top-Attack Capability
According to Lockheed Martin, the Javelin uses an arched top-attack flight profile. The missile flies above its target before striking from the top, where armour remains weaker.
The manufacturer describes Javelin as a leading shoulder-fired anti-armour system. The weapon already serves with the US Army and Marine Corps.
India remains among the world’s largest military spenders and arms importers. Furthermore, New Delhi and Washington signed a 10-year defence framework agreement in October.
Despite trade tensions, defence cooperation has continued between both countries. Washington recently imposed tariffs on Indian goods and criticised New Delhi’s Russian oil purchases.
In July, India approved military acquisitions worth $5.46 billion. The package included missiles, electronic warfare equipment and Kamikaze drones.
India’s Defence Acquisition Council approved the purchases in principle. The council includes senior military officials and operates under the defence minister.
