Iraqi security forces launched a large-scale operation inside Baghdadโs fortified Green Zone early Sunday. The heavily secured district houses government offices, diplomatic missions, and residences of senior officials. However, authorities have not released an official statement about the operation.
According to an AFP source, the raid targeted several politicians over alleged financial corruption. The source said judicial orders authorized the operation. Anti-terrorism forces and military personnel reportedly participated in the coordinated raids.
Security Operation Targets Officials
Videos circulating on local Telegram channels showed tanks and other military vehicles entering the Green Zone. Some footage also appeared to show security personnel inside residential compounds. However, authorities have not independently verified the videos.
Furthermore, the security source did not identify any officials involved. No confirmed details have emerged regarding the reported arrests. Nevertheless, local media circulated the names of several senior Iraqi officials following the operation.
Government Intensifies Anti-Corruption Efforts
The reported raids come as Iraq’s new Prime Minister, Ali Al-Zaidi, promises stronger action against corruption. He has repeatedly pledged to address financial misconduct and administrative failures. Additionally, his government aims to improve transparency and strengthen public institutions.
Corruption and mismanagement have troubled Iraq for decades. Consequently, many citizens continue demanding greater accountability from public officials. Sunday’s operation may signal a tougher approach toward alleged corruption. However, authorities have yet to confirm the investigation’s scope or announce any formal charges against those reportedly targeted.
