Washington: The United States is reviewing a fresh Iranian proposal to ease tensions in the Middle East, even as President Donald Trump signals reluctance to accept Tehranโs terms. Meanwhile, reports indicate Iran will soon share an updated plan with Pakistan following internal consultations.
According to CNN, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will brief Iranian leadership after returning from Russia. However, the process has slowed due to reported communication challenges with senior leadership. Despite this, officials suggest Tehran remains committed to pursuing a phased diplomatic approach.
Initially, the proposal calls for ending the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran and securing guarantees against future attacks. Subsequently, negotiators would address the US naval restrictions on Iranian trade and discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz under specific arrangements. Only after these steps would talks expand to include Iranโs nuclear programme.
President Trump, posting on Truth Social, acknowledged elements of the proposal, stating that Iran sought the reopening of the strategic waterway. Nevertheless, analysts believe Washington remains hesitant, particularly as regional actors warn of a prolonged stalemate if no agreement emerges.
At the same time, Iran has maintained a firm stance. Officials continue to demand security assurances while rejecting what they describe as excessive US demands. military representatives also confirm heightened monitoring, signalling readiness to respond to further escalation.
Domestically, the conflict has increased pressure on the US administration. Rising fuel prices and concerns over military resources have intensified scrutiny. Vice President JD Vance has reportedly questioned Pentagon assessments in private discussions.
Despite the blockade, limited maritime movement persists, highlighting ongoing risks to global energy supplies.
