An Iranian football delegation failed to enter Canada this week and returned from Toronto, disrupting plans to attend a major pre-World Cup meeting. According to Tasnim News Agency, officials cited โunacceptable behaviorโ by immigration authorities despite holding valid visas. The group had planned to travel onward to Vancouver for a key international football assembly.
Officials cite immigration dispute
The delegation included federation president Mehdi Taj, secretary general Hedayat Mombeni, and deputy Hamed Momeni. Iranian authorities stated that the group returned to Turkey on the next available flight after the airport incident. Moreover, officials criticized what they described as disrespect toward Iranโs armed forces, referencing Tajโs past links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
In response, the Canadian government said it could not comment on individual cases due to privacy laws. However, it reiterated a consistent policy that individuals affiliated with the IRGC are inadmissible to Canada. Officials emphasized that Ottawa designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2024 and continues to enforce related restrictions.
Tensions complicate World Cup planning
The delegation had intended to attend the FIFA Congress in Vancouver ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Consequently, the incident highlights broader concerns over visas, security, and political tensions affecting tournament logistics. While FIFA expressed regret and signaled plans to engage with Iranian officials, uncertainty remains.
Meanwhile, global stakeholders continue to debate how geopolitical disputes may impact participation. As preparations intensify, organizers face mounting pressure to ensure smooth travel for teams and officials across host countries.
