India has deported nearly 5,000 Bangladeshi nationals since recent political changes in West Bengal. Official figures revealed the deportations after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party secured a major electoral victory. The party campaigned on promises to identify and remove undocumented migrants. Consequently, authorities accelerated actions against illegal immigration across the border state.
West Bengal shares a long and porous border with Bangladesh. Economic challenges and family connections have historically driven cross-border migration. After assuming office, the state government established detention facilities for undocumented migrants. Authorities also detained Rohingya refugees who fled persecution in Myanmar. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the latest figures during a public address in Kolkata.
Government Expands Deportation Measures
Adhikari stated that authorities established holding centers in every district during May. He reported that officials deported approximately 4,800 Bangladeshi nationals through these facilities. Furthermore, authorities currently hold another 836 individuals awaiting deportation. The government is arranging their removal in the coming weeks. Officials said deportation efforts target individuals outside protections offered by citizenship laws.
The administration maintains that the campaign strengthens border management and national security. Meanwhile, authorities continue monitoring undocumented migration throughout the state.
Critics Raise Human Rights Concerns
However, critics argue that the BJPโs immigration policies increase anxiety among Indiaโs Muslim communities. Rights organizations have previously accused authorities of deporting Bengali-speaking Muslims without proper legal procedures. Additionally, political leaders have faced criticism for using controversial language regarding migrants.
Relations between India and Bangladesh remain sensitive following political changes in Dhaka during 2024.ย
Nevertheless, ties have gradually improved since Bangladesh elected a new government in February. Border force chiefs from both countries are scheduled to meet in New Delhi. The meeting aims to discuss border management and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
