New Format Introduces Preliminary and Super Seven Stages
The International Cricket Council has approved a major format change for the 2027 Menโs Cricket World Cup. The revised structure could create an opportunity for India and Pakistan to face each other twice during the tournament.
The competition will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. It will feature 14 teams, but the tournament will now begin with a preliminary Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked qualifiers.
The three teams will compete in a round-robin format. Only the highest-placed side will advance to the next stage. The other two teams will be eliminated before entering the main group round.
The remaining 11 teams will join the preliminary-round winner to create a 12-team main stage. Those teams will be divided into two groups of six.
Each team will play five matches during the group stage. The top three sides from each group will qualify for the Super Seven round.
One additional team will advance based on its performance across the two groups. This will complete the seven-team lineup for the next stage.
India and Pakistan Could Meet Twice
The revised structure increases the possibility of an additional India-Pakistan match.
If both teams are placed in the same six-team group, they will meet during the opening group stage. Should they both advance, they could face each other again in the Super Seven round.
The Super Seven will use a complete round-robin format. All seven teams will play each other, producing 21 matches before the semifinals.
However, a second India-Pakistan match is not guaranteed. It will depend on the official group draw, qualification results and both teams reaching the Super Seven stage.
India-Pakistan matches remain among the most watched and commercially valuable fixtures in international cricket. Political tensions have prevented the two countries from playing regular bilateral series in recent years.
As a result, major ICC tournaments have become the main platform for matches between the regional rivals.
The possibility of two meetings could significantly increase audience interest, television ratings and commercial activity around the 2027 World Cup.
Quarterfinals Removed From Revised Tournament Structure
The ICC has decided not to introduce quarterfinals in the new World Cup format.
Instead, the top four teams in the Super Seven standings will qualify directly for the semifinals.
The team finishing first will face the fourth-placed team. The second-placed side will meet the third-placed team in the other semifinal.
The winners will progress to the World Cup final.
The decision means the tournament will rely heavily on round-robin cricket. Teams must remain consistent across several stages instead of depending on a single quarterfinal performance.
The ICC said the new structure would create greater competitiveness and consequence throughout the competition. It believes more matches will remain important from the opening round to the final stages.
The Super Seven format will also provide leading teams with more high-profile matches before the knockout stage. However, critics may argue that the absence of quarterfinals removes an additional knockout round that could have produced greater drama.
The ICC also approved changes for the 2028 Menโs T20 World Cup. The 20-team tournament will feature five groups of four, followed by a Super Ten stage and two new eliminator matches.
