Karachi police have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the robbery and fatal shooting of Dr Akash Kumar, a 28-year-old doctor who was killed near Teen Talwar in Clifton earlier this week.
According to South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza, investigators traced the suspects after reviewing extensive surveillance footage and gathering evidence from multiple locations. Police also recovered part of the stolen cash during the operation.
The arrests mark a significant development in the high-profile case that drew widespread public attention.
Three Suspects Arrested During Police Operation
Addressing a press conference, DIG Asad Raza said the three suspects were arrested within the jurisdiction of the Defence Police Station.
According to the investigation, the suspects reached the crime scene on two motorcycles.
Police gathered initial details of the incident within 24 hours. Subsequently, officers completed the arrests over the following 36 hours.
The official said investigators acted quickly after collecting evidence from the crime scene and surrounding areas.
Police Reconstruct Sequence of Events
According to DIG Raza, the suspects had already positioned themselves near the bank before Dr Akash Kumar arrived.
Investigators believe one of the accused conducted reconnaissance before the robbery and shared information with the remaining suspects.
Police further revealed that the suspects used two motorcycles and one car during the commission of the crime.
The investigation focused on tracking their movements before and after the incident.
CCTV Footage Played a Key Role
Investigators relied heavily on surveillance footage to identify those involved.
DIG Asad Raza said police collected and reviewed more than 100 CCTV recordings during the investigation.
The extensive footage enabled investigators to trace the suspects’ movements and reconstruct the events surrounding the robbery.
According to police, the detailed review of surveillance cameras significantly accelerated the investigation.
Portion of Stolen Money Recovered
Police also recovered part of the money allegedly stolen during the robbery.
According to the South DIG, investigators seized a portion of the stolen cash from the arrested suspects during the operation.
The recovery formed part of the evidence collected in the ongoing investigation.
Two More Suspects Identified
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho said investigators have identified two additional suspects linked to the case.
He stated that police expect to arrest them soon as the investigation continues.
According to the IGP, CCTV footage remained one of the most important pieces of evidence in solving the robbery-murder case.
Safe City Project Helps Investigations
While discussing the investigation, the Sindh police chief also highlighted the progress of Karachi’s Safe City Project.
He said the project’s first phase has been completed successfully with approximately 1,150 CCTV cameras installed across the city.
In addition, around 90 percent of the second phase has already been completed.
According to the IGP, the expanding surveillance network has strengthened law enforcement’s ability to investigate crimes more effectively.
Police Highlight Crime Trends
Javed Alam Odho also shared recent figures regarding Karachi’s security situation.
According to him, the city recorded 37 terrorism incidents last year, compared with seven incidents so far this year.
He further stated that crime in Karachi’s Defence area has declined following the installation of surveillance cameras.
The IGP also said street crime in Sindh decreased by 11.8 percent during the first six months of the year.
Investigation Continues
Although three suspects have been taken into custody, police continue their investigation to locate the remaining individuals allegedly involved in the robbery and killing of Dr Akash Kumar.
Investigators are continuing to examine available evidence while pursuing the two additional identified suspects. Authorities believe the combination of surveillance footage, recovered evidence, and ongoing investigative work will help complete the case.
