Parho Khyber Pakhtunkhwaโ to Bring Virtual Teachers Into Schools
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is moving ahead with an ambitious digital education programme that will bring artificial intelligence-assisted teaching, virtual classrooms and digitised lessons into public schools.
The initiative, called Parho Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is designed to expand access to quality education, particularly in areas facing shortages of qualified teachers.
Under the programme, the provincial curriculum will be digitised and textbooks will be made available through mobile phones.
Students will also be able to access classes offline. This could allow children in areas with unstable internet connections to continue studying without remaining permanently connected to the internet.
One of the most unusual elements of the programme is the proposed use of AI-generated virtual versions of real teachers.
Media reports describe these as โhuman clones,โ although they are digital teacher avatars rather than physical or biological clones.
The virtual instructors can be developed using the appearance and voice of experienced teachers.
A digital version of a Peshawar-based teacher with experience in government educational institutions and Cambridge-linked teaching has reportedly already been developed.
Officials envision using such technology to deliver lessons in mathematics, physics, language subjects and other parts of the curriculum.
Reports say the system is being developed to cover around 2,900 curriculum modules for students from grades six to 12.
Unlike ordinary prerecorded video lectures, the planned system is intended to provide greater interaction.
Students could ask questions and receive AI-assisted responses while following lessons delivered through virtual teacher characters.
Rs5 Billion Investment Could Connect Hundreds of Schools
The digital education reforms were reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
The provincial government says the programme will require a one-time investment of approximately Rs5 billion.
Officials have projected that the wider digital education model could eventually generate annual savings of more than Rs100 billion.
Those figures are government projections and will depend on how extensively the system is implemented and how future operating costs compare with the existing education model.
The government says smartphone availability could make the programme easier to expand.
Officials told the meeting that approximately 90 percent of households in the province have access to smart devices.
Online teaching has already started in more than 50 schools.
The government aims to connect 500 schools to its virtual learning platform by the end of August.
Selected schools are expected to use screens, cameras, microphones, internet connections and audio systems to connect students with virtual classes.
Existing Foundation Virtual School initiatives have already provided remote learning support to schools in areas including Bajaur and South Waziristan.
The wider programme is particularly important for remote districts where shortages of subject specialists can leave students without regular access to science and other specialist teachers.
Instead of requiring every school to have an expert teacher physically present, the proposed model could allow one experienced instructor or digital teaching system to reach students across multiple locations.
Virtual science laboratories are also planned.
These would allow students to study practical scientific concepts digitally when physical laboratory facilities are unavailable.
Digital language laboratories are expected to offer courses in English, Chinese, Korean, French, Arabic and Spanish.
Teaching content in Pashto is also planned alongside English and other curriculum languages.
Government Targets Major Literacy Increase but Challenges Remain
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has set a target of significantly improving literacy in the province within two years.
The provincial government believes digital education can reduce geographical and social barriers that prevent children from receiving consistent schooling.
Officials have also highlighted the potential benefits for girls who face difficulties travelling to educational institutions in some communities.
The system is intended to combine artificial intelligence with human-led instruction rather than simply eliminate teachers.
Students could receive personalised learning pathways based on their progress and academic needs.
The integrated platform is also expected to manage lessons, assignments, examinations, attendance and academic monitoring in one digital system.
However, the programme faces significant implementation challenges.
Teachers and education stakeholders have questioned whether an advanced AI-based system can operate successfully in schools that still struggle with reliable electricity, internet connectivity, teacher vacancies and basic infrastructure.
Reports on the project have highlighted concerns that technological solutions alone may not address deeper structural problems within the education sector.
The success of the programme will therefore depend on more than the development of virtual teachers.
Schools will require reliable equipment, technical support, trained staff and access to connectivity where live interaction is required.
Questions will also remain about the accuracy of AI-generated answers, student privacy and the level of human supervision needed inside classrooms.
For now, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is positioning the project as a major experiment in digital public education.
If the programme reaches its targets, students in remote communities could eventually receive lessons from the same virtual instructors and digital resources available to children in major cities.
