Pakistan Secures Three Medals at International Competition
Pakistani students have delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 International Nuclear Science Olympiad in Jeddah, winning one gold and two silver medals.
The Pakistani team was selected and trained by the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
The third International Nuclear Science Olympiad was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 2 to August 8, 2026.
Around 120 students and experts from 19 countries participated in the international competition.
Participating nations included Pakistan, China, Japan, Russia, Turkiye, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Oman, Jordan, Qatar, the Philippines and several other countries.
The competition was held under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
It focuses on nuclear science and its peaceful applications while encouraging scientific excellence and international cooperation among young students.
Muhammad Ali Wins Gold as Two Students Secure Silver
Muhammad Ali from Government College University Lahore won a gold medal for Pakistan.
Muhammad Usman from F.G. Sir Syed College, The Mall, Rawalpindi, secured a silver medal.
Seerat Fatima Bhatti from Nixor College, Karachi, also won a silver medal.
Syed Shuja Haider from Sundar STEM School in Lahore was the fourth member of the Pakistani team and also represented the country at the Olympiad.
The students were selected through the Pakistan Nuclear Science Olympiad.
The national programme is run under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission to identify talented students and prepare them for international nuclear science competitions.
The selection process was jointly conducted by the Directorate of Education at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Following their selection, the students received specialised training and mentoring from faculty members before travelling to Saudi Arabia.
The International Nuclear Science Olympiad tests students on their knowledge and understanding of nuclear science.
The competition also highlights peaceful uses of nuclear technology in areas such as energy, healthcare, agriculture, industry and environmental protection.
Saudi Arabia also produced a strong performance at the competition.
Saudi student Amjad Mahmoud Issa Al-Darwish won the overall competition and received a gold medal after achieving the highest combined score in theoretical and practical examinations.
Pakistan Selected to Host 2027 Nuclear Science Olympiad
Pakistan received another major honour during the event after being announced as the host of the fourth International Nuclear Science Olympiad in 2027.
Officials Dr Muhammad Maqsood from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and Dr Sajjad Tahir from the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences received a commemorative memento marking Pakistan’s selection as the next host country.
The announcement will bring the international nuclear science competition to Pakistan for the first time.
It also reflects Pakistan’s growing participation in international scientific education and youth competitions.
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission said programmes such as the Pakistan Nuclear Science Olympiad are designed to develop young scientific talent and encourage students to pursue careers in science, engineering and nuclear technology.
Pakistan has now recorded notable performances in consecutive editions of the competition.
The latest gold and silver medals add to the country’s growing record at international science Olympiads and provide further recognition for young Pakistani students competing on the global stage.
With Pakistan preparing to host the 2027 edition, attention will now turn toward organising the next competition and developing another team capable of competing for international medals.
