Iconic Structure Hit by Severe Weather
Heavy rain in Islamabad has damaged the prominent eagle monument installed at the Shaheen Chowk Underpass.
The monument is one of the most visible decorative features at the busy junction. It shows a large eagle standing above a globe-shaped structure.
The installation was designed to enhance the appearance of the newly developed underpass. It also became a recognisable landmark for commuters travelling through the area.
However, the heavy rainfall on Saturday night caused visible damage to the structure. Images and videos of the damaged monument later circulated on social media.
The incident raised questions about the strength of decorative installations placed at newly completed public projects.
Authorities have not yet released a detailed assessment of the damage. It is also unclear how much repair work will be required.
Officials are expected to inspect the monument and determine whether the damage was caused only by strong rain or by weaknesses in its installation.
Shaheen Chowk Underpass Opened in December 2025
The Shaheen Chowk Underpass is located at the intersection of Khayaban-e-Iqbal, commonly known as Margalla Road, and 9th Avenue.
The junction is one of the busiest traffic points in Islamabad. Several educational institutions and government offices are located near the site.
The Capital Development Authority developed the underpass to reduce traffic congestion and improve movement between major parts of the capital.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif laid the foundation stone of the project in October 2025.
The initial estimated cost of the underpass was Rs1.3 billion.
The CDA later expanded the scope of the project. This increased the total cost by up to 15 percent.
The authority also extended the underpass barrel from 56 metres to 85 metres.
Although the project originally had a longer completion period, the CDA completed the construction within 63 days.
The underpass was officially opened to traffic on December 31, 2025.
Officials had presented the rapid completion as a major achievement in public infrastructure development.
Damage Raises Concerns Over Construction Quality
The latest rain-related damage has triggered concerns about the durability of structures installed under major government projects.
Residents and social media users questioned whether proper safety and quality standards were followed during the installation of the eagle monument.
Some observers also demanded an investigation into the materials used for the structure.
The damaged installation has renewed debate over the maintenance of decorative features at public infrastructure sites.
Experts often stress that outdoor monuments must be designed to withstand heavy rain, strong winds, heat and other weather conditions.
Regular inspections are also required to identify structural weaknesses before they become serious risks.
The CDA has not yet announced when the monument will be repaired or restored.
There is also no official information about the cost of the expected repair work.
The incident comes as Islamabad continues to experience intense rainfall during the monsoon season.
Heavy rain frequently causes flooding, road damage and traffic disruption in different parts of the city.
The damage to the eagle monument has now added another concern for local authorities responsible for maintaining public infrastructure.
Residents have urged the CDA to conduct a full safety review of decorative structures installed at the underpass and other major development projects.
