Hamas has announced its willingness to hand over governing authority in Gaza after two decades in power. The group invited a US-backed interim administration to assume responsibility for governing the Palestinian territory. A question arises here, is this offer of Hamas will end Israeli bombings in Gaza?
The announcement came amid continued efforts to strengthen the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. However, uncertainty remains over whether the move will improve humanitarian conditions or advance the stalled peace process.
Although Hamas said it was prepared to transfer security responsibilities during the transition, it made no commitment to disarm. Israel and the United States have repeatedly demanded the group’s disarmament.
Interim Administration Faces Uncertain Future
Hamas offered to transfer authority to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). However, Israel has prevented the committee from entering Gaza since its establishment in January.
The NCAG was created as part of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement. Consequently, questions remain about when any transfer of authority could realistically take place.
Analysts described Hamasโ announcement as largely symbolic. They believe the move aims to revive peace negotiations and facilitate humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts.
Hamas Announces Leadership Transition
Mohammed al-Farra, head of Hamas’ administration in Gaza, announced his resignation from government positions. He said all necessary preparations had been completed for transferring administrative responsibilities.
Al-Farra added that Hamas would immediately end its political role in governing Gaza. Meanwhile, civil servants and public employees would continue performing their duties until the interim administration arrives.
The announcement also comes as debate continues over Israeli-backed proposals for Gaza’s future governance and reconstruction. Therefore, observers say the success of any transition will depend on political agreements among all parties.
