Cairo prepares for fresh negotiations as mediators seek progress on next phase of truce
GAZA/CAIRO: Hamas is expected to announce the dissolution of its Committee for Monitoring Government Activity, the body that has effectively managed administrative affairs in the Gaza Strip, according to two Hamas sources cited by Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday.
The sources said the move would pave the way for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), also known as the Technocrats Committee and headed by Ali Shaath, to assume administrative responsibilities inside the enclave.
One source indicated that the announcement could be made as early as Monday, while another said the decision was expected soon without providing a specific timeline. Hamas has not officially confirmed the reports.
Cairo to host new round of negotiations
Meanwhile, Hamas and Palestinian faction sources said a fresh round of negotiations is expected to begin in Cairo within the next two days. The talks aim to narrow differences over the second phase of the fragile Gaza ceasefire agreement and support efforts to maintain calm.
According to the report, mediators led by Egypt, Qatar and Tรผrkiye continue working to stabilise the agreement and advance implementation of its remaining stages. The sources also alleged that Israel violated the multi-stage ceasefire agreement announced last year, while military operations continued and senior Hamas officials were killed.
International mediation efforts continue
The report further stated that Cairo will host meetings involving Palestinian factions, including Hamas, as part of the latest diplomatic initiative.
Sources also claimed that Nikolay Mladenov, identified as Gaza’s representative on the Board of Peace, had arrived in Egypt to participate in discussions alongside US officials involved in international stabilisation efforts. However, his reported participation could not be independently verified.
People familiar with the matter said Mladenov’s involvement would depend on progress in negotiations regarding the proposed amendments to the ceasefire agreement following Hamas’s response to the latest mediation proposals.
Diplomatic efforts continue as regional and international mediators seek to preserve the ceasefire and create conditions for broader political and humanitarian progress in the Gaza Strip.
