Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has approved a new motorway project aimed at improving travel and trade connectivity in northern Pakistan. The route will pass through Mansehra, Kaghan, Naran, Jhal Khand, and Chilas, offering an alternative to the Karakoram Highway (KKH).
The approval came during a meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA), where officials reviewed ongoing and planned infrastructure projects. Senior government and NHA representatives also attended the briefing.
Officials said the proposed Mansehra-Naran-Chilas (MNJC) Motorway will span 172 kilometers. It will reduce travel distance on the Karakoram Highway by up to 120 kilometers, improving both speed and efficiency for commuters and freight transport.
The project will be developed in two phases. First, construction will connect Mansehra with Kaghan and Naran up to Babusar Top. Then, the second phase will extend the route from Babusar Top to Chilas.
A key feature of the project is the planned 13.5-kilometer Babusar Tunnel. Once completed, it will become the longest tunnel in Pakistan and significantly improve year-round accessibility in the region.
The motorway will initially include four lanes, with plans for future expansion to six lanes. In addition, modern rest areas will be built every 25 to 30 kilometers to support travelers. Freight terminals will also be constructed at both ends to facilitate cargo movement.
Officials said the new route will strengthen regional connectivity and support trade links between Pakistan and China. It will also provide a shorter corridor connecting Karachi and Gwadar ports with western China.
The minister directed the NHA to complete technical planning and project preparations within the given timeframe to ensure timely progress.
