North Korea conducted a firepower drill with long-range artillery and missiles amid rising regional tensions.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the exercise took place Saturday. It involved combined units from different levels of the Korean People’s Army.
South Korea reported that North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles from Wonsan toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
The launches came one day after South Korea completed five days of joint maritime exercises with the United States and Japan focused on North Korean threats.
New Weapons Feature in Military Exercise
However, KCNA did not disclose the drill’s location or provide details about its targets.
Instead, it said North Korean forces deployed several new combat systems, showing its expanding military capabilities.
The weapons included attack drones, tactical cruise missiles, large-caliber thermal-pressure multiple rocket launchers and tactical ballistic missiles.
According to KCNA, the systems demonstrated their destructive power through concentrated fire and claimed 100 percent accuracy.
Drill Follows Joint Regional Exercises
Meanwhile, the latest exercise came amid heightened military activity around the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea, the United States and Japan have increased cooperation through joint exercises to improve responses to security threats.
North Korea has regularly condemned such drills, describing them as preparations for aggression.
The latest launch and firepower exercise could further increase regional tensions between Pyongyang and its three regional rivals again.
