The government has decided to shift Pakistanโs passport system to e-passports to curb fraud and forgery. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced the decision during a meeting at the Passport and Immigration Headquarters in Islamabad. Consequently, officials aim to modernize the entire passport issuance process.
The meeting approved key reforms focused on digital transformation and service efficiency. Moreover, authorities said the new system will reduce manual errors and eliminate fake documentation risks. The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve governance and transparency.
Cashless System and Digital Platform Upgrades Introduced
Officials also decided to introduce a cashless payment system in all passport offices from July 1, 2026. Therefore, applicants will no longer rely on physical cash transactions for passport services. The government believes this step will reduce corruption risks and improve accountability.
Additionally, all online passport applications will shift to the PakID platform. This integration will centralize digital identity and application processing. As a result, citizens will experience faster and more streamlined services.
The meeting also approved doorstep passport delivery services within Pakistan and abroad. Officials confirmed that preliminary arrangements for the service have already been completed. Furthermore, premium service users will be required to pay additional fees for expedited processing.
Reforms Aim to Modernize Immigration System
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directed officials to finalize consultations with the Federal Board of Revenue regarding business passports. He emphasized that reforms should ensure both efficiency and security in passport issuance. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Immigration provided a detailed briefing on implementation progress.
Officials said the reforms will significantly reduce opportunities for document fraud. In conclusion, the government aims to build a secure, fully digital passport ecosystem across the country.
