Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry sparked criticism after questioning why women choose policing careers in Pakistan. His remarks on X drew widespread backlash from journalists, social media users, and supporters of women officers.
Chaudhry shared his views while responding to a post about Islamabad Chief Traffic Officer Kainat Azhar Khan. He claimed most women were “completely useless as cops” and called policing a poor career choice.
Social Media Users Reject Remarks
His comments quickly attracted criticism across social media platforms. Journalist Hamid Mir described the remarks as male chauvinism. He argued many Pakistani men respect female diplomats despite holding similar views.
However, Chaudhry defended his position in another post. He said talented women should become scientists or entrepreneurs instead. He also claimed capable individuals should avoid policing because officers do not require exceptional abilities.
Nevertheless, many users rejected his explanation. Several questioned why women should avoid serving in an important public institution. Others accused him of disrespecting female officers performing their professional duties.
Debate Highlights Women’s Role in Policing
Many users specifically defended CTO Kainat Azhar Khan. They argued she serves like any other civil servant. Some also asked Chaudhry to provide evidence supporting his claims about women police officers.
Another user questioned how women would seek protection without female officers. Others challenged Chaudhry by asking why he chose politics as a career.
Pakistan has witnessed growing female representation in law enforcement during recent years. Officers including Kainat Azhar Khan, Shehrbano Naqvi, and Amna Baig have earned public recognition. Consequently, many users viewed Chaudhry’s remarks as dismissive of women’s contributions to policing.
