Pakistan is seeking to attract Apple to its growing mobile phone manufacturing sector, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expected to meet Apple CEO John Ternus in the United States.
The proposed meeting could take place when the prime minister travels to Washington for a series of high-level engagements in the coming months.
The Engineering Development Board (EDB) CEO shared the development on Thursday while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.
Pakistan Seeks Apple Manufacturing Investment
According to the EDB chief, Pakistan currently has 37 companies manufacturing mobile phones locally.
These companies have produced more than 35 million handsets in the country so far, highlighting the expansion of Pakistan’s domestic mobile phone industry.
However, Apple remains the only major smartphone manufacturer that does not currently produce phones in Pakistan.
Therefore, the government wants to attract the company to establish manufacturing or assembly operations in the country.
The expected meeting between Shehbaz Sharif and Ternus could support those efforts and provide an opportunity to discuss potential investment options.
Government Wants More Local Production
The EDB briefing also highlighted Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand domestic mobile phone production.
The committee chairman welcomed the industry’s growth but stressed that the country needs to increase local manufacturing further.
He said locally produced smartphones should remain affordable while meeting international quality standards.
Moreover, he called for greater investment in locally manufactured 4G and 5G devices rather than continuing to focus on outdated 3G technology.
Apple Entry Could Strengthen Mobile Industry
Apple’s potential entry could further expand Pakistan’s mobile manufacturing ecosystem if the company establishes local assembly or production facilities.
Such an investment could also strengthen local supply chains and create opportunities for manufacturers supporting the smartphone industry.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s existing production base provides a foundation for attracting additional international smartphone companies.
The proposed meeting in Washington could therefore become an important step in the government’s efforts to bring Apple into Pakistan’s mobile manufacturing sector and expand the country’s technology industry.
