Confidence in alliance despite rising tensions
Estonia has expressed strong confidence that the United States would defend it in the event of a Russian attack, even as concerns grow over NATOโs internal strains. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur reiterated this stance during a visit to Vilnius.
Pevkur emphasized that Estonia trusts both the US and its NATO allies, underscoring the importance of collective defense. He also dismissed fears of the alliance collapsing, arguing that NATO remains resilient despite disagreements.
Meanwhile, tensions within the alliance have increased following remarks by Donald Trump, who recently criticized European members over defense contributions and broader strategic commitments. These developments have added pressure on NATOโs unity.
However, Pevkur compared the alliance to a long-term partnership, noting that disagreements are natural over decades of cooperation. Therefore, he stressed the need for continued dialogue and cooperation among member states.
Europe urged to boost military capacity
At the same time, Pevkur warned that Europe is not yet capable of defending itself independently against Russia. He called on NATO members to increase defense spending and strengthen military readiness.
Although NATO leaders previously agreed to raise defense budgets, many countries have yet to meet targets. In contrast, Estonia plans to allocate over five percent of its GDP to defense this year, positioning itself among the allianceโs top contributors.
Furthermore, Pevkur highlighted broader geopolitical challenges, including tensions involving Iran. He suggested that resolving such conflicts could allow the US to refocus on security concerns in Eastern Europe, particularly the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
Overall, Estoniaโs position reflects both confidence in NATOโs collective strength and concern over Europeโs current defense limitations.
