Pakistan has recorded the highest weekly increase in diesel prices across South Asia, creating fresh concerns for transporters, businesses and consumers already facing rising costs. The sharp rise came as the federal government continued its daily fuel price adjustment system. Industry experts warned that frequent price changes have made it difficult for transport operators to manage expenses and maintain stable rates.
According to columnist Farrukh Saleem, Pakistanโs diesel prices increased by 20 percent within one week. Meanwhile, Afghanistan recorded only a 1.4 percent increase, while India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal reported no changes during the same period.
Diesel Price Surge Raises Transport Costs
Official figures showed that diesel prices reached Rs388.38 per litre after increasing from Rs323.30 per litre. The latest adjustment added Rs65.08 to the price within a week.
The sudden increase has created challenges for the goods transport sector. Transporters said they are struggling to manage operational costs due to continuous fuel price revisions.
The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has already announced multiple fare increases. Representatives warned that freight charges are rising beyond manageable levels.
โEvery round trip of a trailer now costs hundreds of thousands more. We are compelled to pass this burden onto consumers,โ one representative said.
Higher Fuel Costs May Increase Inflation Pressure
The impact of rising diesel prices is spreading across different sectors of the economy. Higher transportation expenses are increasing the cost of moving goods, which may eventually affect prices of essential commodities.
Traders and business groups have expressed concerns that unstable fuel pricing could disrupt supply chains. They believe frequent adjustments are making it difficult for businesses to plan expenses and maintain predictable operations.
Transporters have also warned that continued price increases could put additional pressure on Pakistanโs logistics system. The sector plays a key role in moving food products, industrial materials and other essential goods across the country.
Calls Grow for Fuel Policy Review
Economic observers believe the government needs to review the current pricing mechanism to reduce uncertainty in the market.
They warned that continued pressure on transport costs could affect consumers and businesses alike. A stable fuel policy, they said, would help improve market confidence and support economic activity.
As diesel prices continue to rise, concerns are growing over their impact on inflation, transportation expenses and the overall cost of living in Pakistan.
