WHO Declares International Health Emergency
The WHO announced an international health emergency as the deadly virus spreads into neighboring provinces and Uganda. Emergency meetings were held to strengthen the global response.
No Approved Vaccine for Current Ebola Strain
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. Health experts warned that conflict zones and limited medical access are making containment difficult.
Congolese authorities said many infections were reported late because communities initially believed the illness was linked to supernatural causes. Cases have now reached key cities including Goma and Butembo.
The Africa CDC also declared a continental public health emergency. The United States has started airport screening measures and suspended visa services from affected regions.
