The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has ruled that cornea donation and transplantation are permissible under Islamic law. The decision applies in cases of medical necessity and subject to specified conditions.
The council issued the ruling during a meeting in Islamabad. Members also discussed religious, legal, healthcare, environmental, and regional issues.
Council Issues Religious and Legal Recommendations
The CII declared that publishing sketches of revered Islamic personalities on private television channels is impermissible under Islamic law. It urged media organisations to avoid broadcasting or publishing content considered disrespectful.
The council said removing controversial material alone was insufficient. Therefore, it called for legal action against those responsible.
Moreover, the CII urged media outlets to balance freedom of expression with respect for religious sensitivities.
The council also supported restoring punishment for attempted suicide. Additionally, it stated that the Islamabad High Courtโs ruling on matrimonial assets was inconsistent with Islamic injunctions.
While reviewing the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2026, the council also clarified matters relating to child maintenance.
CII Backs Environmental and Diplomatic Initiatives
The council supported federal legislation banning plastic shopping bags. Furthermore, it urged provincial governments to introduce similar laws to strengthen environmental protection.
The CII also praised Pakistanโs diplomatic efforts to help secure a ceasefire between Iran and the United States. It called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure uninterrupted international maritime trade.
Finally, the council expressed satisfaction over the peaceful observance of Muharram across the country.
