China may face limited risks from renewed US-North Korea negotiations, analysts say. The talks could eventually prompt Washington to reduce its military commitments in South Korea.
US President Donald Trump has already ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise. He criticized the drills over their cost and claimed they sent hostile signals to Pyongyang.
Following Trump’s order, South Korea’s defence ministry shortened the joint exercise by six days. Authorities also cancelled counter-attack drills and reduced the scale of field training.
Trump Seeks Fresh Talks With Kim Jong-un
Trump has expressed interest in meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un later this year. The US president previously met Kim twice during his first term.
Trump also praised his relationship with Kim and described North Korea as unthreatening and respectful. Additionally, he claimed North Korea possessed 57 powerful nuclear weapons.
However, Kim’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, dismissed the changes to the military exercises. She said she knew nothing about communication between Washington and Pyongyang.
Kim Yo-jong described the reduced military drills as unimportant. Her comments suggested North Korea remained cautious about Trump’s renewed diplomatic efforts.
China Could Face Fewer Security Pressures
Analysts believe China could benefit if Washington reduces its military presence around the Korean Peninsula. A weaker US security commitment could ease pressure on Beijing and reshape regional military dynamics.
Troy Stangarone, a visiting senior fellow at the Korea Economic Institute of America, said Trump could enter talks from a weaker position. He pointed to North Korea’s growing relationship with Russia as a key factor.
According to Stangarone, Russia has reduced the impact of international sanctions against North Korea. Moscow has also provided the regime with an economic lifeline and transferred new military technology.
Therefore, North Korea may have fewer incentives to accept major US demands. Meanwhile, China could benefit from any reduction in US military activity without directly leading the negotiations.
