Poultry Kept on Roof and Lawn of Official Department
Punjab University has come under fresh scrutiny after reports claimed that chickens were being kept inside the official building of its Electrical Engineering Department.
According to a media report, chickens were found in different parts of the department, including the rooftop, lawn and other spaces within the building. The report alleged that chicken coops had been built on the roof, while the departmentโs lawn had also been converted into an area for keeping poultry.
The presence of chickens inside an academic department has raised serious questions about the use of university space, administrative control and the condition of official buildings meant for students and educational activities.
Public Funds Allegedly Used for Chicken Safety
The report further claimed that public funds were spent to secure the area where the chickens were being kept.
According to the report, nearly half a million rupees from government funds were allegedly used to install a protective fence around the lawn. The fence was reportedly installed to keep the chickens safe.
The matter has sparked concern because government resources are meant to support education, research, infrastructure and student facilities. If public money was used for an unauthorized purpose, the issue may require a formal inquiry.
The report also alleged that government employees working in the department had been assigned duties to look after the hens. This has raised further questions about whether official staff were being used for private or non-academic work.
Students Face Movement Problems After Fence Installation
The installation of the protective fence has reportedly created difficulties for students.
According to the report, the fence has blocked a pathway that students previously used to reach the universityโs main library. This has affected routine movement and caused inconvenience for students who rely on the route.
The incident has added to concerns over administrative oversight at Punjab University. Students and observers may now expect the university administration to explain who allowed the chickens to be kept inside the department and why public funds were allegedly used for the arrangement.
The report has also raised broader questions about accountability in public universities. Educational institutions are expected to maintain academic spaces for learning, research and student welfare. Any misuse of official buildings or public resources can damage public confidence in university management.
Authorities may now be required to investigate the matter, verify the allegations and take action if any rules were violated.
