Government Pushes for Pre-Budget Legislation
Pakistanโs federal budget has reportedly been delayed as the government tries to pass key legislation before the budget session. Parliamentary sources told Geo News that the budget may now be presented on June 10 instead of June 5.
The government wants to approve important amendments before presenting the next fiscal yearโs budget. Sources said these changes could directly affect major budget decisions and financial planning for the coming year.
PPP Opposes Proposed Amendments
The Pakistan Peoples Party, a major coalition partner, has opposed the proposed legislation. Sources said the party is not ready to support the amendments in their current form.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has already made his position clear. He addressed the issue during a recent speech in Shigar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, where he was campaigning for upcoming elections.
According to parliamentary sources, if the amendments are not passed before the budget session, several planned changes for the next financial year may not be possible.
MQM-P Links Support to Political Demand
The deadlock has pushed the government to seek help from influential figures. Sources said important personalities have been asked to convince the PPP leadership and resolve the issue before the revised budget date.
Meanwhile, another coalition partner, MQM-P, has also placed conditions on its budget support. MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar recently linked the partyโs approval of the federal budget to the reappointment of Kamran Tessori as Sindh governor.
The growing pressure from coalition allies has created uncertainty around the budget process. The government now faces a tight timeline to secure political support and complete its legislative agenda before presenting the federal budget.
