Apple has accused Indian antitrust investigators of relying on competitors’ claims instead of conducting an independent investigation. Consequently, the company requested authorities to dismiss the investigation’s findings.
The allegations appear in Apple’s June 25 submission to the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Reuters reviewed the regulatory documents.
The dispute marks Apple’s strongest challenge yet in the ongoing antitrust case.
Apple Rejects Investigation Findings
Apple argued investigators “copy-pasted” submissions from rival companies. It claimed officials failed to verify the allegations independently.
The company identified Match Group, PhonePe, and Paytm among the complainants. However, those companies did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Apple also argued it holds less than six percent of India’s smartphone market. Therefore, it rejected claims that it abused its market position.
Furthermore, Apple opposed any penalties requiring changes to its App Store. It warned such measures could disrupt its integrated business model.
The company also claimed regulatory changes could discourage future investments in India’s digital economy.
Hearing Scheduled Next Month
In 2024, CCI investigators concluded Apple engaged in abusive conduct through its iOS App Store. They alleged the company unfairly required developers to use Apple’s payment system.
However, Apple has consistently denied those allegations.
The company also argued investigators copied graphics from a 2024 European Union ruling. Apple said Indian market conditions differ significantly from European markets.
Reuters found both reports cited data from research platform Statista.
Meanwhile, the CCI and its investigations chief declined Reuters’ requests for comment. Senior CCI officials will hold a closed-door hearing with all parties on July 21.
