Veteran Executive Steps Into Top Role
Apple on Monday named longtime executive John Ternus as its next chief executive officer, signaling a major leadership transition at the technology giant. He will assume the role on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook, who has led the company since 2011 and will move into the position of executive chairman.
The change comes at a pivotal moment as the global tech industry shifts toward artificial intelligence-driven innovation. Consequently, Apple faces growing competition from rivals investing heavily in AI-enabled devices and services.
Ternus, 50, joined Apple in 2001 as part of its product design team. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming vice president of hardware engineering in 2013. Later, in 2021, he joined the executive team as senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting directly to Cook.Hardware Leadership
Shapes Future Strategy
Throughout his tenure, Ternus has overseen development of Appleโs core product lineup, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. Moreover, he played a central role in revitalising Mac sales, helping the segment gain market share in recent years.
Most recently, he introduced the iPhone Air, representing the most significant redesign of the device since 2017. As a result, his leadership reflects Appleโs continued focus on hardware innovation alongside evolving software capabilities.
Before joining Apple, Ternus worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. He also holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
With this transition, Apple positions itself to navigate technological disruption while maintaining its legacy of design and product excellence.
