ย A gang of masked thieves broke into the renowned Lalique museum in northeastern France early Sunday morning, stealing crystal jewelry worth up to four million euros. The daring raid occurred just months after a stunning hundred-million-dollar gem heist at the Louvre museum in Paris.
The burglars forced open a door around 5:30 a.m. before entering the main jewelry room and smashing six display cases. A source close to the investigation confirmed that the thieves stole approximately twenty pieces of crystal jewelry. The items contain no precious gems and cannot be melted down, which complicates potential resale efforts on the black market.
A serious security delay hampered the initial response to the break-in. Although the museum alarms triggered immediately, the private security firm failed to alert the authorities right away. A cleaning lady actually discovered the crime scene first and contacted the local police. The museum announced a temporary closure for several days while experts review CCTV footage and assess the precise financial losses.
The Mayor of Wingen-sur-Moder, Christian Dorschner, expressed deep anger over the security company’s failure to notify the gendarmes. He stated that the perpetrators clearly possessed detailed information and acted like experienced specialists. The targeted site houses over 650 exceptional works, including classic Art Nouveau jewelry and contemporary crystal pieces.
French authorities previously designated the Lalique museum as a sensitive site following last October’s dramatic Louvre heist. In that earlier incident, thieves stole 102 million dollars worth of crown jewels in under eight minutes. Investigators are currently checking for links between the two high-profile museum robberies.
