YouTube has started rolling out a new in-app messaging feature for users worldwide. The update follows a successful testing phase and focuses on improving video sharing within the platform. Users can now communicate directly without leaving the app. The feature aims to make sharing videos and discussions more convenient.
New Messaging Tool Enhances Video Sharing
A new messaging icon now appears in the top-right corner of the YouTube app. Users can share videos, Shorts, and live streams through private conversations. Additionally, the feature supports one-to-one chats between approved users.
However, YouTube has introduced several privacy controls to prevent unwanted messages. Users must first send an invitation link before starting a conversation. The invitation remains active for seven days and can be shared through WhatsApp or other messaging applications.
Privacy Controls Limit Unwanted Messages
Recipients can choose either “Allow messaging” or “Not now” after receiving an invitation. Therefore, users maintain full control over who can contact them through the platform. YouTube says the system encourages communication between friends and family instead of strangers.
The company revealed that users frequently requested the feature during last year’s testing period. Previously, YouTube offered a similar messaging service before discontinuing it in 2019. This latest version focuses primarily on sharing and discussing content rather than becoming a full-featured social messaging platform.
