BEIJING: China’s President Xi Jinping on Monday praised Beijing’s “unbreakable” friendship with Pakistan as he welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The meeting took place during PM Shehbaz’s four-day official visit to China aimed at strengthening the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries.
PM Shehbaz arrived in China on Saturday and reached Beijing after a stop in Hangzhou. Greeting the prime minister, President Xi described him as an “old friend” and said China and Pakistan had supported each other for decades while building an enduring bond based on trust and cooperation.
Xi said China would continue to prioritise ties with Pakistan regardless of global developments. He added that Beijing remained ready to work closely with Islamabad to deepen the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership and build a shared future together.
Pakistan Highlights Role in Regional Peace Efforts
In response, PM Shehbaz called Pakistan and China “iron brothers” and said their relationship remained unmatched. He also thanked China’s leadership for supporting peace efforts in the Middle East and backing regional stability.
Moreover, Xi acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role in recent mediation efforts involving Iran and the United States. He appreciated Islamabad’s efforts to promote dialogue and peace during a tense period in the region.
Leaders Agree to Expand Cooperation
Earlier, PM Shehbaz held talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and stressed the need for both countries to work together for peace and economic stability. Both sides reviewed bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed support on core interests.
They also agreed to advance the next phase of CPEC and signed multiple agreements covering trade, investment, agriculture, technology, climate change, education, media, and people-to-people exchanges.
