A dramatic security scare unfolded outside the White House on Saturday evening after an armed suspect opened fire near a security checkpoint, triggering an immediate lockdown and a large-scale emergency response by the United States Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to US officials, the suspect approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue before firing shots at officers stationed outside the White House complex. Secret Service agents quickly responded by returning fire and neutralizing the gunman before he could breach the presidential security perimeter.
US President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the incident as he continued diplomatic discussions linked to an Iran-related agreement. Officials confirmed that Trump remained unharmed throughout the emergency situation.
Secret Service Responds Within Seconds
Security teams rapidly sealed surrounding streets as panic spread through downtown Washington. National Guard troops blocked major access points near the White House while law enforcement agencies evacuated journalists, tourists, and bystanders from the area.
According to law enforcement officials cited in American media reports, the suspect was identified as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been placed under a โstay-away order.โ Authorities did not immediately release the suspectโs identity.
The gunman was critically injured after Secret Service agents returned fire. He was transported to George Washington University Hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries, according to US media outlets.
Fox News host Bret Baier reported that the suspect fired at least three shots near the west side of the White House before agents responded. Reports also suggested that one bystander was injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Officials stressed that the suspect never entered the White House grounds and did not get close to President Trump.

A Secret Service spokesperson later stated that authorities were still collecting evidence and reviewing security footage from the scene.
Fresh Security Fears After Previous Threats Against Trump
The latest shooting has once again raised concerns about security threats surrounding President Trump. The 79-year-old president has faced multiple alleged assassination attempts over the past two years.
In April, an armed man reportedly stormed a hotel checkpoint during a media event attended by Trump. The suspect was stopped before reaching the president.
In July 2024, Trump was also targeted during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman opened fire during the event, killing one audience member and injuring Trump in the ear.
Another armed suspect was later arrested near a golf course in West Palm Beach where Trump was playing.
Following Saturdayโs shooting, House Republicans thanked the Secret Service for what they described as a rapid and heroic response. Political leaders also renewed calls for an end to political violence across the United States.
