Washington Discusses Alternative Operation Name Amid Rising Tensions
The Trump administration has reportedly considered launching a renewed military campaign against Iran under a new operational title, including the proposed name โOperation Sledgehammer,โ if the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran collapses.
According to NBC News, US officials have discussed replacing the earlier campaign title, โOperation Epic Fury,โ should President Donald Trump authorize another large-scale military operation in the region.
The discussions highlighted growing expectations within the administration that direct conflict with Iran could resume as diplomatic negotiations remain stalled and tensions continue around the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, some officials reportedly argued that adopting a new operational name could help frame any renewed offensive as a separate military action under the 1973 War Powers Resolution. The law limits how long a US president may conduct military operations without congressional approval.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that โOperation Epic Furyโ officially ended after Washington and Tehran agreed to halt hostilities last month.
Despite the ceasefire, the United States has continued expanding military capabilities across the Middle East since fighting first erupted in February.
Tehran Demands Guarantees Before Returning to Negotiations
At the same time, diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified after Tehran refused further negotiations unless Washington accepts five minimum guarantees.
Iranian officials demanded an end to military operations across the region, particularly in Lebanon, along with sanctions relief, access to frozen financial assets, compensation for war-related damages, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
The diplomatic deadlock followed the collapse of negotiations in Islamabad and President Trumpโs rejection of Tehranโs latest response, which he described as โtotally unacceptable.โ
Furthermore, Iranian officials criticized a recent 14-point US proposal as โcompletely one-sided,โ while Washingtonโs naval blockade continued worsening mistrust between both countries.
