The US Department of Defense announced on Wednesday that the US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) will officially return to its former name, the US Pacific Command (USPACOM), restoring a designation that represented the military command for more than 70 years.
The command was originally established on January 1, 1947, by then-US President Harry S. Truman. It operated as the US Pacific Command until 2018, when it was renamed the US Indo-Pacific Command to reflect Washington’s broader strategic focus across the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the Pentagon, restoring the USPACOM designation honors the command’s long-standing history and strengthens the sense of pride and shared identity among military personnel serving across the Pacific.
The Defense Department said the name change recognizes the command’s significant contribution to the post-World War II security framework in the Pacific. It also acknowledges its role during major conflicts, including the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as its participation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
Despite the change in designation, officials stressed that the command’s operational responsibilities will remain exactly the same. The area of responsibility will continue to stretch from the waters off the western coast of the United States to the western border of India.
Furthermore, the Pentagon emphasized that the command’s mission, strategic objectives, and geographic scope will remain unchanged. Officials said the renaming is intended to restore a historic identity rather than signal any shift in military policy or regional priorities.
The Defense Department also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a free and open Pacific theater in close coordination with regional allies and partners. It added that the command will continue carrying out its existing responsibilities across the region without any operational changes.
The announcement marks a symbolic return to the command’s historic identity while reaffirming continuity in US military strategy and partnerships throughout the Pacific.
