Tehran: Growing uncertainty surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei has sparked fresh debate over Iranโs decision-making structure, according to analyst Thamar Eilam Gindin. Speaking on Israeli radio station 103FM, she highlighted confusion over authority within the countryโs leadership.
Rumors and unclear chain of command
Eilam Gindin said conflicting reports about Mojtaba Khameneiโs condition have circulated since late February, with speculation intensifying in recent weeks. Moreover, rumors of his death have spread widely, fueled by reports that his image appeared at a memorial ceremony among fallen figures.
She explained that, unlike former president Ebrahim Raisi, Mojtaba has largely remained out of public view, with no clearly defined official role. Consequently, questions persist about his influence and involvement in state affairs.
In addition, she suggested that unidentified groups may be issuing statements in his name to legitimize decisions. Therefore, analysts increasingly point to the existence of opaque power structures, often described as a โdeep state,โ operating behind the scenes.
Military autonomy and internal pressures
Meanwhile, Eilam Gindin pointed to growing divisions between Iranโs political leadership and military forces, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. She claimed the group may be acting independently in regional operations, sometimes without the knowledge of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Furthermore, she noted rising internal pressure within Iran due to worsening economic conditions. As a result, she argued that public frustration continues to build, while authorities respond with stricter enforcement and increased repression.
She also referenced exiled figure Reza Pahlavi as a potential focal point for opposition voices. Overall, the situation highlights growing uncertainty within Iranโs leadership and governance structure.
