United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the United Statesโ decision to extend its ceasefire with Iran, calling it a positive step toward reducing tensions. His spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said the move creates an opportunity for diplomacy and confidence-building between Washington and Tehran.
Dujarric emphasized that the UN encourages all sides to avoid actions that could jeopardize the truce. Furthermore, he urged both countries to engage constructively in negotiations aimed at achieving a sustainable and lasting resolution. He also reiterated the UNโs support for Pakistanโs role in facilitating dialogue, expressing hope that continued efforts would help secure a comprehensive agreement.
Meanwhile, the development follows an announcement by Donald Trump, who confirmed that the ceasefire would remain in place to allow Iran time to present a unified proposal. He stated that the decision came after requests from Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, reflecting Islamabadโs growing diplomatic involvement.
However, uncertainty continues to surround the next phase of talks. A US delegation led by JD Vance had been expected to travel to Islamabad for a second round of negotiations, but the visit was delayed without a confirmed new date.
Earlier discussions in Pakistan ended without a breakthrough, underscoring persistent divisions between the two sides. Additionally, the ceasefire, initially set to expire this week, remains a temporary measure rather than a permanent solution.
Consequently, while the extension provides a diplomatic opening, significant challenges remain as both sides navigate a complex and fragile peace process.
