Kyiv Reports Reversal of Russian Battlefield Momentum
KYIV: Ukraine has claimed it regained more territory than it lost during May, marking a reversal of a trend that had previously favored Russian advances on the battlefield.
Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Ukrainian forces achieved a net territorial gain of nearly 100 square kilometres during the month. Other military assessments placed the gains even higher, suggesting Ukrainian troops recovered between 120 and 280 square kilometres while limiting Russian advances.
According to Ukrainian officials, the country’s armed forces have recaptured approximately 600 square kilometres of territory since the beginning of 2026. However, fighting remains intense in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces continue efforts to advance in parts of the Donetsk region.
Military analysts noted that Russia has made progress around the city of Konstiantynivka, an important defensive position in eastern Ukraine, despite broader Ukrainian gains elsewhere.
Long-Range Strikes Target Russian Logistics Network
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials attributed recent battlefield successes to a strategy focused on disrupting Russian supply routes, fuel depots, ammunition warehouses, and transport infrastructure.
Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said strikes on targets located more than 50 kilometres behind the front lines doubled in May compared to April. Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted nearly 2,000 such operations during the month.
The campaign has significantly affected Russian logistics in southern regions, forcing military planners to reroute supplies and creating shortages in some occupied areas. Reports also indicate growing fuel constraints in Crimea following repeated attacks on transport routes and energy infrastructure.
Drone Warfare Continues to Shape Conflict
Ukraine also highlighted the growing role of drones in the conflict. Military officials reported that Ukrainian short- and medium-range drones struck approximately 180,000 targets during May, representing a notable increase from the previous month.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces claim they have improved their ability to intercept Russian drones. Officials reported a sharp rise in successful interceptions despite increased Russian drone activity.
While Russia continues to maintain significant air power advantages in some regions, Ukrainian commanders argue that drone operations and precision strikes against logistics networks are increasingly influencing the course of the war.
